04 Wrangler Gears?

Hey again,

I have a question that may seem simple... but I am in Iraq and dont really know how else to find out. I have an 04 Wrangler X, 4.0L. What kind of axles and gears come stock with that Jeep? I want to upgrade gears to push my 35in tires and I need to know what it has now. Also, next on the list will be lockers. I need to fix my gearing first though. Also, what gears would be best with my usage? Thanks,

Richard

stock on that jeep should be dana 30 up front and a 35 in the rear. Might as well do gears and lockers at the same time to seve money.

The X is the D30/35 combo, and the gear ratio varies a little depending on which transmission you have behind the 4.0L. Most common ratio for a 5spd is 3.07, and a common ratio for the auto is 3.73. This isn't a steadfast rule so without looking at the tag on the diff cover it could be 3.07, 3.55, or 3.73.

You can go to Jeep's website and send a message to DC with your VIN and request a build sheet. They will email you the specs and it will list the axle ratio.

IT would save you money to do the lockers when you do the gears.

SOme X packages had special edition (like the Rocky Mountain Edition) that came with the 30" tires and wheels. If you have the 30" tire/wheel pkg then you have a D44 rear and D30 front. Otherwise it's a D35 rear and D30 front like stated earlier.

For 35" tires you should consider 4.88 gears for the axles. If you have a D35 rear you might want to consider an axle upgrade for 35 inchers

My understanding is that no X has a D44 rear, the marketing ploy by DC was offering a lower priced 4.0L package without options like a D44 rear axle.

But with jeep, they seem to prove an exception to every rule.
