How about this jeep?

So, in my quest to find a new TJ, I went to see what was described in the add as "a 1999 white jeep with tan top - $5600"

The guy wheeled around a white sahara edition with a hard top, AC, 6cyl manual that had 31 inch tires. The car looked ok, but the inside smelled like he rubbed it down with a dead cat, then threw all his garbage in there.

He claimed the jeep was pretty good, and he had indeed driven it to work that morning. We agreed that pending wife approval, I'd pay $5000 for it.

What do you guys think?

The good
AC
6 cyl
speaker bar
31 inch tires
cruise control

The bad
- 130,000 miles
- check engine light was on - stopped at autozone, and they pulled code P0442 and told me to get a new gas cap "no big deal" per the autozone dude.
- dents in the hood (although I'm an ok painter, no real problem there)
- It felt alittle bouncy, like it could use shocks. I did notice though, that the front sway bar was disconnected, so hooking it back up may fix that.

now on to the photos:

What year?

Is it clean inside? non-smoking?

looks decent enough, have you checked the 4X4?
I would at least lock it in 4 low on a dirt bank and see if everything works and sounds good when engaged.

hmm, forgot to list the year.. it's a 1999. The inside was dirty and stinky. It will probably clean up fine, but I may need to get a carpet kit.

I put it in 4hi, and they light came on. I'm supposed to hear from Erin (wife) tonight, then if everything works out, pick it up tomorrow.

Did he say what happened to the hood? is he the original owner?

No, he didn't say what happened to the hood. He's had it a few years, and said it was like that when he got it. He did say that he replaced the windshield (had a crack) and the passanger front rotor.

P0442 (M) Evap Leak Monitor Medium Leak Detected A small leak has been detected in the evaporative system. ..................doesn't sound real serious - the Autozone dude may be right. 130K?......what about the clutch - replaced somewhere along the line?? If not, probably gonna need one soon.
That seems to me to be a pretty good price (your 5K offer). Me and white don't get along, but that's just me!

I was wondering what those brackets are back by the spare??? CB antenna mount, perhaps?? And if those are the original shocks, yeah, they could be causing the "bounciness" - I replaced mine at around 100K.

It's a Safari??...does it come with the soft-top, too???

For that price, you can afford to throw a little money at it. Sounds like you've pretty much made up your mind!!!

Best of luck!! You know you're always taking a bit of a chance on a used vehicle, but I think you have a very shrewd price!!

Just noticed he's got some kinda mirror relocation brackets on it!!!!!!! You can take off the doors and still have mirrors!!!!!! Another +

I was wondering what those brackets are back by the spare???

The guy said that the previous owner had some sort of "can". I'm assuming he ment a gas can.

I'm trying to keep an open mind to this jeep, and not get hooked on it. It looks like the guy could have washed and vacumed the car, and gotten alot more. I don't however want to make it into more than it is.

Thanks for the opinions guys 8)

well, I just got shot down by the wife :x

She says it's got too many miles, and that I'm to get something with 80 or less. I guess she's right...

If anyone's interested in the jeep (va beach area), shoot me a PM and I'll give you the number

.....................that I'm to get something with 80 or less....................

Well...............ALRIGHT!!!!! Good woman!! She's lookin' out for you!!! It's those ones that say "Absolutely NOT!!" that I have trouble with.:purple: :purple: :purple: :purple: :purple: :purple:

Keep looking. It took me about two years to find the right one.My wife was the same as yours but I'm glad now she was!
