Where to Mount a Hi-Lift Jack on a YJ?

Re: RE: INTERSHIP / Co-op ... oil field

I've been looking over a couple of threads that Mud posted for me awhile back in regards to mounting locations for a Hi-Lift jack, and just can't seem to find anything substantial in them. I'd like to see several different ideas with pictures that don't include buying (or making) a whole new bumper/spare tire carrier. I've got the stock front bumper and the bumperettes on the rear.

Anyone with ideas or pictures of how they mounted theirs, or even links to some decent mount kits for stock bumpers (or anywhere else on the Jeep)?

Sparky what about a hood mount? Or a rear mount behind the back seat? Mine is riding behind the rear seat now. I havne't mounted it but I have the gear. Only reason it's not mounted is because I haven't done any riding lately. I hated mine on the rear bumper. It got bent and hung me up in tight or low spots. Not good. The hood mounts look sweet (I think). I don't have any good links though. Sorry!

RE: Death Wobble "Are we all bound to get it?"

i have friends that have drilled holes in the tail gate hingers, where it bends down to go to the door, and put bolts through each one of those. that seems to work well. it stays close to the vehicle, out of the way of obstacles, and is easy to access. they turn it upside down and rest the hook on top of their tire or just put a bolt through on of the holes in the jack to hold the mechanism in place

I've seen one idea on another YJ. The guy cut off 2 of the spare tire mounting bolts and welded on longer ones that stick past the tire. This way he mounts his spare as normal using nuts threaded all the way down the long bolts then mounted his high lift on the two long bolts sticking past the tire and used two more nuts to hold it in place against the spare tire. The two long bolts just stick through the notches on the high lift.

any of the mounts outside the jeep look cool, but its a fact that hi-lifts dont like the elements. if at all possible, its best to keep it inside, i have a few friends with YJ's that have them mounted across the back right behind the rear seat inside, nice and out of the way, and most important, protected from mother nature.

set the base on the inner rear fender, jack it up till the lip of the jack touches the top of the roll bar and give it one more pull on the handal, or half a pull. and whalla. your jack is mounted.

A little grease every once in a while will do wonders.

You can remove the "bumperettes" and get the brackets from Hi-lift to mount it to the rear crossmember. I have also seen folks use U bolts to mount it to the rear downward rollbars, stretching the hi-Lift across the back of the jeep.

Mine's mounted to my Wilderness rack ;)

RE: Paragon Monthly Ride (Oct 1,2)

jeepless20 - good idea. There are a dozen places you could do this.

RE: Do I have a axle problem?

I have mine mounted on the outside and yes it takes a pounding from the sun and snow.
It is mounted on the rear of the swing away tire carrier and I havnt noticed any reduction in departure angle.
I have two co-workers who have built hood mounts for theres I will grab a few pics for you and post them here.

RE: Jeep recovery gone wrong.

If your not stuck on mounting it outside, I think it was BountyHunter (correct me if I'm wrong) that mounted his inside with exhaust clamps...or something similar. It went across the back of the rear roll bars. Maybe he'll, or whoever it was, will chime in here cause there were some good pics too.

Yeah, Sparky, I bought the little mounting kit ($15~) and mounted it to my stock front bumper (had to drill a couple holes - no big deal)........but that's really not a good place, as has been mentioned. Kinda inaccessable if you're stuck bumper-deep in mud, but at least I've got it with me!!!! It's still there, for now, but I'll probably be moving it. On a side note, the little velcro strap that holds the handle gave way (rotted out) when we were on the return trip from our little Max Patch venture..........made a Godawful noise...thought I'd busted something on the suspension!!!! If was on the hood or inside, that wouldn't have happened. Oh, well! Choose more wisely than me, my friend!

Who's internet is it?

I once saw pics of someone mounting theres under the hood hanging from the two grill supports that run from front to back. don't know if the YJ's have this though. This one was a TJ. I'm going to look into that.

RE: Greetings from New Orleans

i good mounting point will be, A: easily accessable, B: out of harms way and C: secure
take all of those into consideration

the bumper mounts violate a and b, the hood mount does a good job of taking care of them all, tire carrier mounts do a good job, and so do the mounts behind the back seat. as far as the elements go, all it takes is a little wd40 once in a while to keep it in working order, mine has been exposed to the elements for so long its not even funny, i use it way mor ethan most people do as well, tahts why it has to be easily acessable for me. mine is mounted on my tire carrier, on the angled brace going down to the spindler. its secure, out of harms way, and easy to get to when i need it.

RE: Sub frame connectors???

Paint it bright orange and mount it on the hood so you can show it off better

I vote for either inside or high and dry on the rear of the Jeep somewhere for the permanent mounting point.

Where ever I mount it, it will be locked down. I'd like to put it inside the Jeep, but as it's my daily driver, and when I do take it camping or anything else, I really need all the extra room I can get inside. I don't put my backseat in but maybe once a year, if that much. I guess somehow attaching it to the rear bars wouldn't be bad, so long as it could be done up high and out of the way of the soft top. I'm interested in the hood mounting idea, where and how is this done? I'd love to see a picture of that, too. I believe it was graewulf that posted a link for a rigid case for the hi-lift jacks, and I still have that page bookmarked. I'd love to be able to incorporate that into the mounting as well.

These are all great suggestions, you guys and gals are fantastic!!! Keep'em coming and throw some pics up here for me to look at as well. My birthday is tomorrow and my mommy gave me some money and told me to buy a "new toy for my Jeep" (seriously, that's what she said!), so I'm going to be a good boy and do what mommy says! :D Of course, Sunshine wants me to buy something we can both use, so I told her that next time we go wheeling, if we get stuck, I'll let her trapse out into the mud to get the jack! With our upcoming trip to the Gulf, I'd like to have as much necessary gear as I can get, too.

Sparky, I would concentrate on mounting it where it will be secure from theft, the elements, and it's not going to kill you in an accident. If you find yourself in a situation where you will need to access the jack several times you can temporarily strap it in place in several locations. All it takes to hold it to the bumper good enough to go down a trail is a couple of tabs and a good bungee strap.

That's exactly what I am looking for. I still think it's about going to have to be outside, however, due to space, unless someone posts a good pic of a better spot inside. WD-40 is my friend, so I'm not too worried about rust and corrosion. Even better if I can find a way to use the rigid case I mentioned earlier. Of course, if I do end up mounting it inside, I suppose I can get some exterior mounts to use for trail trips as a temporary mounting point.

RE: neubie help

I highly suggest mounting it inside if you want it to be reliable when you need it most. I mounted mine across the tailgate, mounted to each rollbar upright. I used muffler clamps and wingnuts, but fence post clamps work equally well or better.

out of the way and it stays relatively clean. Mounts and dismounts quick and easy.

its very similar to that, actually i think its the same one, im not sure but a buddy of mine has one

I got the bumper mounts and put it on the back of my rear bumper. This is until I buy a new bumper/tire carrier combo that should have a spot for a hi-lift. I keep the jack well greased and the Jeep is kept in the garage, so it stays dry.
